Vandaag is er met versienummer 3.6.0.127 een nieuwe bèta van Skype for Windows uitgekomen. Skype is een zogenaamd Voice over IP-programma waarmee het mogelijk is om door middel van tekst, spraak, beeld of een combinatie daarvan met andere gebruikers te communiceren. In versie 3.6 lijkt de nadruk op het beeld te liggen en de belangrijkste vernieuwing in deze eerste bèta is dan ook de mogelijkheid tot een hogere kwaliteit van de videocalls. Het volledige changelog van deze release ziet er als volgt uit:

De ontwikkelaars van Skype hebben een nieuwe bètaversie van de Linux-client van Skype beschikbaar gesteld. De update is voorzien van versie 2.0.0.13 en kan vanaf deze pagina gedownload worden. In de nieuwe Skype for Linux wordt een nieuwe feature getest, die de naam 'Free Video Calling' heet. Dit houdt in dat het mogelijk is om tijdens het bellen de webcam te gebruiken. Met enige regelmaat komen er nieuwe versies van het voip-programma Skype voor Windows uit. Voor Mac OS X en Linux is dat veel minder het geval. Ook lopen deze clients achter qua functionaliteit enigszins achter met hun Windows-broertje. Zo is verleden maand in de eerste bèta van versie 2.0 pas de mogelijkheid van videocalls geïntroduceerd voor Linux-gebruikers. Naast een paar kleine veranderingen en verbeteringen, bevat deze tweede bètarelease van versie 2.0 voornamelijk bugfixes:

New features:

• Command-line login functionality provided by --pipelogin
• Show when somebody is speaking during a call.
• API: Add GET/SET WINDOWSTATE functionality.
• Shift-Enter in contact list will activate the opposite default action on the selected contact (call instead of chat and vice versa).

Improvements:

• Changes to ease CPU usage on v4l(1) cameras.

Skype heeft ongeveer een week geleden een nieuwe bètarelease van zijn gelijknamige VoIP-programma voor Mac OS X vrijgegeven. Het versienummer hiervan is 2.7.0.195 beta en de download kan hier worden gevonden. De download weegt iets meer dan 34MB schoon aan de haak, maar het gaat hier dan wel om een zogenaamde Universal Binary. De ontwikkelaars hebben sinds de vorige release, die alweer van eind januari is, niet stil gezeten, en het changelog laat dan ook een lange lijst van veranderingen en verbeteringen zien:

Vandaag is er met versienummer 2.0.0.43 een nieuwe bètarelease van het voip-programma Skype for Linux verschenen. Het zal de meeste bezoekers inmiddels bekend zijn wat er met dit programma gedaan kan worden, dus verdere introductie is niet nodig. De bèta is voor verschillende Linux-distributies vanaf deze pagina verkrijgbaar en de download ligt voor alle versies rond de 15MB. Het changelog van deze release laat de volgende veranderingen zien:

• uvc users should upgrade to revision 166 or later of this driver if they are having issues with Skype.
• Non-accelerated X11 output currently doesn't scale video output. This means that in full-screen, the video will be smaller than the available screen size. And similarly, in video preview, you will only see a cropped section of the actual video window.
• Contact Groups are currently not yet implemented.
• fglrx (ATi graphics) users should be running 8.40.x or later drivers

Ook is het mogelijk elkaar bestanden toe te sturen en een spelletje te spelen. Daarnaast kan tegen een kleine vergoeding ook naar vaste en mobiele telefoons worden gebeld. De download is net geen 21MB groot, maar wie liever iets kleiners heeft, kan bijvoorbeeld eens op het MSFN-forum kijken. Hier is vaak kort na het uitkomen van een officiële release een uit uitgeklede versie van zo'n 13MB groot te vinden. Skype heeft woensdag de tweede bètarelease uitgebracht van zijn voip-client Skype for Windows 4.0. Wat meteen opvalt in versie 4.0 is het nieuwe uiterlijk. De ontwikkelaars gaven aan dat er hard over nagedacht is om het gebruik van Skype nog eenvoudiger te maken. Zo is het scherm een stuk groter geworden en moet het vinden van nieuwe contacten en het versturen van bestanden makkelijk zijn.
